  Thallus foliose-lobate, closely attached, ±rosette-forming, to 20 cm wide; black, fibrous prothallus visible at margins. Lobes laciniate, to 2 mm wide, 6–10 mm long, discrete or imbricate centrally; margins entire, ±narrowly tapering or ±bifurcate at apex, flat or wavy, thickened below. Upper surface smooth, matt, lettuce green to olivaceous when wet, pale grey-green when dry, becoming cinnamon-brown on storage; margins slightly darker, shining, epruinose, sometimes ±cracked, ±coriaceous. Lower surface with dense, buff or brown indumentum and rhizohyphae almost to margins, pale buff brown. Cephalodia flattened, placodioid, to 2 mm wide, marginal and laminal, simple, globose at first, becoming wrinkled-plicate. Apothecia frequent, often crowded, sessile or subpedicellate, round to irregular, to 5 mm wide; disc often gyrose-etched, often with concentric rings or ridges, epruinose, darker centrally, red-brown or orange; margins thick, crenulate-striate. Ascospores ellipsoidal-fusiform, 11–20 × 8–11 µm. CHEMISTRY: vicanicin.
     
  A common Southern Hemisphere lichen which seems genuinely rare in Australia; on rainforest trees and saplings between 100 and 1700 m from sites in Qld, N.S.W. and Tas. Widely distributed in New Zealand, also in South America and in the tropical areas of the Pacific Basin.
